stalking people from a century ago.

So, I had my friend over at the weekend which was lovely. I’d not seen her since Christmas so we spent the weekend wandering about York and then watching films whilst eating FAR too much Ben & Jerry’s! Anyway, we stopped by an Oxfam bookstore and I was immediately drawn to a couple of boxes stuffed with old postcards. Some had been written on, some hadn’t, some were over a century old, some were from the 80s. I spent about half an hour rifling though them and picked out a couple of the oldest to stick on my noticeboard in my room.

This was the first:

From 1905! And gorgeous, oldy-worldy writing too. This was written before TV, before the First World War. The powered aeroplane had only just been invented. (So the writer instead holidays in the Welsh port town of Milford Haven.) I’ll write it out how I think it reads for clarity-

‘Dr [Dear?] N.

Am not very busy here today. Weather is much finer but cold. Mr. Banns [?] is lodging with me now. With kind regards to all.

Yours Geo.’

Funny how something so plain can become a little more interesting after 100 years. There’s really nothing special about it, but it caught my eye. Is Geo short for George, or is it a woman’s name? Was Miss Rand offended by the lack of kisses at the end? Did anything ever happen between Geo and Mr Banns?! Probably not, but I can wonder.

This was the second card:

There’s no date on this one but it seems to have been made using a rather old-fashioned printing process, as the surface is uneven in texture and there are brush strokes in the gloss used. The information at the top states that there is a King and Queen reigning, so I guess it would be 1952 at the latest (under George VI, the Queen’s dad) but I reckon it’s older. I think I actually prefer this one, because it’s more ambiguous. The fact that there isn’t an address suggests it was sent along with a letter, making the postcard redundant for actually conveying a message. So maybe Dolly really just liked the painting. You don’t meet many people called Dolly these days. Maybe it’s just become too associated with sheep.

Stalking made acceptable, that’s all this is.

Johnny Depp Quote Of The Day

“I was given the ‘weird’ badge but I think everybody’s weird and that’s the key to it. We should celebrate our individuality, not be embarrassed or ashamed of it. We all have idiosyncrasies, tics that are obsessive-compulsive. People do themselves a great disservice by not allowing themselves to see who they really are because they are afraid.”    The Guardian, 2006
